Foundations for Joy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of orphans in Southern Asia. The organization currently works in concert with two dozen orphanages in Sri Lanka as well as several in India, striving to meet their needs for improvements in facility and care. Right now, the focus of our efforts is primarily within Sri Lanka, as we are working with a wide variety of orphanages for abandoned children, many of which house kids with physical and mental disabilities. In most cases, Foundations for Joy works to provide bare necessities to facilities in dire need of aid. Such necessities include bringing food supplies, basic furniture, water purification, and toys to the kids in order to ensure that these shelters are able to remain viable refuges for these wonderful children. Our work with more established orphanages, such as a chain of complexes known as Prithipura Communities, is centered upon bringing vital living amenities, such as electricity, building improvements, and educational tools to the children. By doing so, we hope to lay the necessary foundation for the advancement of these children in today's society, effectively giving abandoned children a chance for life.
Why is such work in South Asia important? Those of us at Foundations for Joy believe that we have a unique obligation to the sons and daughters of the region to at least attempt to ameliorate the relatively poor socioeconomic conditions that plague the area. In the wake of the 2004 Tsunami the world promised that we would help rebuild the region from its devastated state and that we would not stand by idly as poverty continued to define the status quo. However, after billions of dollars in pledged aid, the root problems that enable this tragic situation remain, serve to exacerbate the orphan problem (especially for those with disabilities), and ensure that such children must live in substandard, subsistence living conditions. We believe that giving these abandoned children a better life and a new chance at success will help to end the cycle of poverty in the region in a way that disaster relief could not and will ultimately serve to make society better for everyone. Put simply, what brings young kids joy now will make the world more prosperous in the future.
Foundations for Joy was founded in Austin, TX by Anjali Jotwani and Jordan Sessler, two high school students who were extremely moved by the stories of the children they met while traveling to numerous orphanages in Asia. Today, Foundations for Joy is a widely recognized nonprofit group with IRS tax exemption under sections 501(c)(3) and continues to remain dedicated to using all donor funds to preserve and aid the world's most valuable resource; children.
